The computer needs to support Thunderbolt (which it should, being a 'new iMac'), but the camcorder doesn't, because it's going to be connecting to the Firewire side. You can get a Thunderbolt-to-Firewire adapter from Apple for $30. My question is then, can I get a firewire/thunderbold cable, and if so, would my computer recognize it although, thunderbolt didn't exist at the time when I purchased my camcorder (2005)? Any suggestions welcome. I'm not familiar enough with the improvements in USB 3.0 to know if a USB 3.0 to Firewire converter is feasible, but I'm not aware of any such converters (working or otherwise). I have seen a few converter cables advertised, but when you read feedback by customers who have actually purchased them, they turn out to be scams. Firewire has features like support for 'guaranteed' real-time bandwidth that USB 1.0/2.0 lack. I tried with a firewire 4p to USB (leee1394), (as I thought the old one was of that type) but my computer doesn't register the camcorder.Īs far as I know, there is no such thing as a Firewire-to-USB (1.0/2.0) cable that actually works as advertised.
